Doriglen 500mg Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic containing doripenem, a carbapenem drug used to treat severe bacterial infections. As with any antibiotic, it is ineffective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
Uses
Doriglen is typically administered in a hospital setting for serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Its uses include:
Complicated intra-abdominal infections: This includes infections of the stomach and the areas surrounding it.
Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs): Including pyelonephritis, a serious bacterial kidney infection.
Pneumonia: For infections acquired in a hospital setting.
Other severe infections: This includes infections of the blood (sepsis), skin, soft tissues, and lungs.
Important considerations
Prescription only: Doriglen is a prescription medication and must be administered by a healthcare professional.
Full course of treatment: You must complete the entire course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve quickly. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and may contribute to antibiotic resistance.
Not for all pneumonia: The FDA has not approved doripenem for treating pneumonia in patients on a ventilator.
Contraindications: Doriglen is not for patients with a known serious allergy to doripenem or other beta-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillin.
Drug interactions: This medication can interact with other drugs. It's especially important to tell your doctor if you take valproic acid, as Doriglen can reduce its concentration in the blood and increase the risk of seizures.
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and pain or inflammation at the injection site. More severe, but rare, side effects can include:
Severe allergic reactions
Clostridium difficile colitis (severe bloody diarrhea)
Seizures
